Airbus announced in July 2012 that it would establish a major manufacturing facility in the United States to assemble and deliver A320 Family single-aisle aircraft. Located at the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley, in Mobile, Alabama, it will be the company’s first U.S.-based production facility. The assembly line is part of Airbus’ strategy to enhance its global competitiveness by meeting the growing needs of its customers in the United States and elsewhere.
Aircraft assembly is planned to begin in Mobile in 2015, with first deliveries from the Mobile facility beginning in 2016. Airbus anticipates the facility will produce between 40 and 50 A319, A320, and A321 aircraft each year by 2018. The new complex represents a $600 million investment. Market forecasts predict a worldwide demand for more than 20,000 single-aisle aircraft over the next 20 years. The United States is the world’s largest single-aisle aircraft market. The vast majority of the aircraft manufactured in the Mobile facility will be delivered to North American customers.
The Gulf Coast region has endured great environmental and economic difficulty in recent years, and Airbus is proud to be part of the area’s redevelopment. Airbus already has a strong and growing presence in Alabama. The company operates an Engineering Center in Mobile—also located at the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley—employing more than 200 engineers and support staff—as well as the Airbus Group’s North American military customer services operation supporting U.S. Coast Guard aircraft.
